Budgeting: Wants vs. Needs

When you are spending money, try to determine whether each purchase you make is a want or a need. A want is classified as something that you feel would enrich your lifestyle, while a need is something you need to sustain your lifestyle.

For example, food is considered an everyday need for survival; however, dining out is a luxury that is something you want. You may tell yourself that you need a new flat screen television, but you have to recognize that it is merely a want, something that looks appealing and will serve as entertainment. Other needs include shelter, transportation to your job, and clothing. Wants include ways you treat yourself, such as vacations, entertainment, and higher levels of comfort. Most people do not have and/or cannot afford all the things they want.

A key suggestion is to never allow yourself to substitute a need for a want. Try to evaluate your typical workday. Ask yourself what you purchase, how much these things cost, how often you buy these things, and whether they are wants or needs. After you have answered these questions for yourself, add up all your daily expenses in the wants and needs categories. Once you can visualize how much money you spend on each category, it will be easier for you to save and control how much you will spend on future wants and save more money for the things you need.

Another idea for budgeting is to list all the things you find yourself buying. Then, rank the importance of each item on your list. Since wants and needs are different for each individual, this will enable you to see where your financial priorities are. Now you can budget in way that allows you to cover as many needs as possible, and perhaps, have money left to spend on the things that you want.
